Maroon lifts Lightning past Sabres at Global Series

  • Pat Maroon scored two goals for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 5-3 victory against the Buffalo Sabres at the 2019 NHL Global Series at Ericsson Globe on Saturday.

  • Victor Hedman, Yanni Gourde and Mathieu Joseph scored, and Curtis McElhinney made 40 saves for the Lightning (8-5-2), who defeated the Sabres for the second straight game here and won for the third time in six games (3-2-1).
  • Sam Reinhart scored for the third time in two games, and Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres (9-6-2).
  • Carter Hutton made 35 saves for Buffalo, which is winless in its past five games (0-4-1).
  • Maroon tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 17:02 of the first period, and scored at 19:57 of the second period to make it 3-1.
  • His only other goal this season was against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 3.
  • Hedman, the only Sweden-born player on the Lightning, scored on the power play to make it 2-1 at 1:58 of the second period when his slap shot beat Hutton glove side.
  • It was the second time this season the Lightning scored more than one power-play goal in a game.
  • They scored two in a 7-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 10.
  • Olofsson, one of four Sweden-born players in the game for the Sabres, scored his seventh goal of the season and his first at even strength, to make it 3-2 at 4:14 of the third.
  • Gourde, who has goals in three straight games, made it 4-2 at 9:48 of the third, and Joseph scored at 10:55 to make it 5-2.
  • Eichel scored a power-play goal with Hutton pulled for an extra attacker at 19:22 of the third for his eighth of the season.
  • The Lightning used a coach’s challenge for offside, but the ruling on the ice was upheld.
  • Reinhart gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 9:30 of the first period. A video review confirmed that the puck crossed the goal line prior to the actions of McElhinney causing the net to become dislodged.
  • This was the 28th regular-season NHL game played in Europe.
