Maple Leafs sign Kapanen, Johnsson to extensions

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to three- and four-year contract extensions, respectively, the team announced Friday.
  • The deals were reportedly close to complete during the draft.
  • Kapanen’s contract carries an average annual value of $3.2 million while Johnsson will earn $3.4 million per season.
  • Kapanen, 22, skated in 78 games for the Maple Leafs in 2018-19 and recorded a career-high 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists).
  • In 133 career NHL regular season games, he has recorded 54 points (28 goals, 26 assists), while registering four goals and one assist in 20 career Stanley Cup playoff games.

“There was never a doubt I wanted to go anywhere else. I wanted to stay in Toronto, that was my number one priority. It’s been an honour to play for the Marlies and the Leafs. It’s something special to me.”

  • As for Johnsson,  it’s pretty cool seeing someone like him get paid like that.
  • Sometimes it gets lost w/ assumption most of these guys were always locked into that big money future.
  • Mitch Marner is now the team’s only restricted free agent.
  • The club’s leading scorer during each of the past two seasons is eligible to sign at any point but has reportedly begun meeting with other teams as the threat of an offer sheet looms.
  • The Maple Leafs have a projected $6.9 million in cap space, with an extra $5.3 million made available by placing Nathan Horton on LTIR, according to Cap Friendly.
